RAPE CULTURE

____________________________________________________________________

Rape culture is a society that uses its attitudes or beliefs that contribute to the normalization of rape and sexual violence. This normalization can be done by media, humour, television etc. However, the lack of human rights, objectification, and other beliefs can also contribute to rape culture. Rape culture includes both men and women but the focus for this essay is women. The three case studies that are chosen are India, South Africa, and The United States. These countries were chosen because of the high rape crimes, the lack of women's rights and the evident objectification of women's bodies in media. The reason I chose rape culture for my ISU topic was because it was a term that was coming up a lot in the media lately especially on T.V. followed by the Harvey Weinstein cases. Although, I was hearing this term I didn't really know what it meant and that's why I chose it because it was a huge issue particularly surrounded by women.
