Over the course of Global, there were many quest speakers who came in to expand our knowledge on various subjects addressed throughout the semester.

JOHN BRASSARD 

__________________________________________________________________________________________

Mr. Brassard is the current MP of Barrie and taught us about government systems in Canada. He discussed his job in the Federal Government and the current political climate. He also told us about his own career in politics. Fun fact, Mr. Brassard is a One Directioner!

FADI DAWOOD

__________________________________________________________________________________________

Senior Research Fellow and Co-editor in-Chief Mr. Dawood travelled to our portable to offer an insider view on the provincial election, and to teach us about the complex workings behind the decisions made within the North Atlantic Trade Organization.  He led us through an intriguing task which involved students playing the role of multiple NATO countries debating about a candidate for the position of Secretary General for NATO.

Doug Sole is the founder and co-owner of Soul Drums Ltd. This company showcases the music of Africa to schools, building both teamwork and a worldly perspective. We had the unique opportunity to take part in a traditional drumming circle.

TREVOR CARTER

​

Trevor is an archaeology teacher at St. Joseph’s Secondary School who is also heavily involved in the Canadian charity “First Steps”.  He came in to share his knowledge and experience related to foreign aid and the North Korean Regime through a presentation on the charity.  We learned about the malnutrition, stunted growth, and poverty in North Korea all hidden below the surface and successful self image portrayed by the country.  Mr. Carter has been to North Korea numerous times himself to give valuable nutritious aid to those who need it.

ANDREW CASEY

Andrew Casey is a student currently studying at the Royal Military College in Kingston, Ontario and was a part of Global Perspectives in 2015. He discussed the effects of military intervention by the UN in Afghanistan, the effectiveness of Canadian peacekeeping, and the conflict between the Ukrainian government and the Russia-backed Ukrainian Separatists.

PATRICK WATSON

Mr. Watson, a global student in the first year running, did work in Global Affairs Canada in Ottawa.  He travelled to our portable to share with us his extensive knowledge about foreign aid and discussed his career.  We learned ways to increase the quality and impact of financial aid to other countries and learned of more effective alternatives to mission trips.  As he currently works in Indigenous Affairs, we also learned about today’s issues and challenges faced by the

JERRY JASON

Jerry Jarson is a Ukrainian survivor of WWII who came to our portable to share his experiences in Europe and his struggles with his immigration and integration into Canada. He explained the hardships that he went through after being orphaned at age 8 and how he fled to Canada.

NEIL BARLOW

Mr. Barlow is a businessman and conductor of the Orillia Silver Band. He lived in Germany for ten years and taught us about daily life as a foreigner in Europe, preparing us for our big trip to Germany. He also shared with us some insight about working abroad throughout Europe.

ARIF KHAN 

Barrie City Councillor Ward 8

Mr. Khan came in to teach us about the working definition of the word privilege.  He taught us about his life spent abroad, mainly in Germany. We learned about German culture and what it was like working alongside foreigners directly from his personal experience.  He shared with us his experience travelling all around Europe doing business in countries like France, England, Netherlands, and Spain.

BILL SERGEANT + DAVE DRYDEN

Mr. Sergeant and Mr. Dryden came into our portable to tell us about their work for SCAW (Sleeping Children Around the World). SCAW is a nonprofit, humanitarian organization that has provided over 1.5 million children worldwide with bedkits for a healthier night’s sleep. They discussed their expedition into the African country of Bodo and provided insight into a country that many of us did not know of.

DAVE MORRISON

Mr. Morrison, also known as Morri, is considered to be the father of the Global Perspectives Program. While he is no longer a teacher in the class, he still manages many aspects of the program such as the trip to Cuba. He gave us some greatly appreciated guidance on our ISU, especially the Logic of Evil. Thanks Morri!

GRANDMOTHERS TO GRANDMOTHERS

Cherry and Sheila are part of the Grandmothers to Grandmothers Campaign, a grassroots campaign that assists grandmothers in Africa who are in need. Millions of children in Africa have been orphaned due to the AIDS epidemic, and many grandmothers have difficulty raising so many children on their own. Cherry and Sheila came to our portable to talk about how their organization helps these grandmothers and how we can contribute to this endeavour.
