SUBORDINATION

By: Christina Vo and Cierra Nuggent

Our Shaman shows the correlation between financing sustainable urban development and freshwater in developing countries. Through the topic of our Shaman, subordination, the theme of the Shaman is the negative effects of the limited access to basic necessities such as freshwater and development, due to the developing countries being subordinate to the developed societies. The deteriorating city symbolizes limited growth and development of the municipality due to the limited finance and resources such as water that the government is unable to provide. In the city, the water flowing out of the cracks and windows represents the pollution and limited development that wastes the already scarce water resources. To bring a more in-depth picture into mind, if a home had a faulty tap that kept dripping or a broken sewage pipe, and it was not fixed, freshwater would be wasted. This creates not only floods but also a further scarcity of resources. Moving on to the girl pouring the bucket of water into the city, she represents the willingness to bring more development to her city through the water. Though the water that she is pouring out from her bucket is murky and brown, this represents the only water that she has access to; dirty and polluted. In comparison, above her is a shower and a man standing in front of the shower, where the water is vibrantly blue.
