WORLD ISSUES WITH MR. TORLÉE

____________________________________________________________________________________

The Global Group came back from lunch every day and launched straight into World Issues with Mr Torlee. When Torlee wasn’t entertaining us with stories about his adventures in life he, was teaching us about what was going on in the world around us. We were taught how to analyze issues, avoiding fake news and getting straight to the facts. One of our big projects was our rant: partners picked a world issue to research, and filmed a two-minute long rant discussing why it was an issue. Torlee was full of great project ideas, and turned the course work into a fun way to learn what’s going on in the world.

AN INTERVIEW WITH MR. TORLÉE

 Any advice for future globalites?

My advice to future Globalites is to be open minded and prepared to work hard. If you do this, the experience will be incredibly rewarding.

What is your favourite memory of this year?

The last night in Berlin was amazing. We decided to spend some time in the Gendarmenmarkt. At the end of the evening, we sat on the steps of the Konzerthaus. We were surrounded by incredible history and beauty and even the sky above us looked incredible. We took some time to soak in our surroundings and reflect on the journey. This moment was actually quite emotional. It was definitely an experience that I will never forget.

What is your favourite quote of the year?

Given the fact that Global is full of wacky personalities - there were many memorable quotes. There really isn’t one single quote that stands out.

Why global is important?

It provides a very special opportunity for students to grow academically and personally. Globalites learn how to meet challenges with creative solutions while developing a global perspective. These are important skills that will open their eyes to many opportunities in the future.

How does global change students?

As teachers, we are in an ideal position to see the incredible growth that takes place during the program. Students spend an unprecedented amount of time together tackling challenges in the classroom and abroad, so they form a very close bond with each other. You can see them growing academically and maturing as young adults at an incredible pace.

What do you find different between global and a regular class?

There are several differences. The integration of the five courses is an important distinction between the two types of classes. I also have an opportunity to work closely with the other teachers “team teaching” and I really enjoy this aspect of it.

How did you get involved in global?

I’ve been involved with the program for several years. Initially, Dave Morrison asked if I would be interested in the program and I jumped at the chance! I took a bit of a hiatus while running OFSAA and joined Global again three years ago.
