CHILDREN AND THE CYCLE OF CHILD POVERTY

____________________________________________________________________

There are many global issues that affect children today. These include child marriages, child soldiering, food insecurity within families, lack of childhood education, and lack of sufficient healthcare. The connection between all these pertinent problems is their contribution to the cycle of poverty. Individuals can be trapped within this self-sustaining circle for the entirety of their lives, resulting in impoverished young sons and daughters destined to live a life of destitution. I chose to write my Independent Study Unit report on children and the cycle of poverty because childhood poverty is an important issue to many organizations and individuals worldwide. Although the paper does not focus on a specific country, three case studies are included outlining the issue in Bolivia, Tajikistan, and Mozambique. Unfortunately, the true essence of what causes and continues child poverty is difficult to comprehend. Children are at the centre of the cycle of poverty, and we, as the international community must work in unity to break this circle.
