POLITCS WITH MR. BABCOCK

____________________________________________________________________________________

Politics In Action: Making Change, was a very interesting course, that was taught by a very interesting man, Mr Babcock. We were taught about Canada’s political system, court system, electoral system and the political spectrum. We learned the importance of reading the news and being up to date with the world’s current issues. During class time, we enjoyed learning about politics and listening to Babcock’s many stories about anything and everything. Babcock also taught us about communism and we got to experience much of what we were taught about, first-hand, with our trip to Cuba. After the course, all of us students were left with useful knowledge about many topics related to politics.

AN INTERVIEW WITH MR. BABCOCK

 Any advice for future Globalites?

Be prepared to take risks that will result in personal growth.

What is your memory of this year?

I have a few:

- One evening in Cuba, after our trip to Matanzas, we had a group discussion about privilege. There were a lot of tears when our students began to realize how their new friends lived (and survived) through their struggles.

- Taking the class through the streets of Santa Marta, Cuba was important; the students saw first hand how a third world country functions.

- Our last night in Berlin on the Big Trip was pretty special. Enjoying the changing blue sky with the students will stay with me forever.

.

What is your favourite quote of the year?

“I’m so fly, I could touch the sky” - J. Wayne Toole

Why is Global important?

It is important to get out of the bubble we often live in and see how the rest of the world functions…..or doesn't.

How does Global change students?

Taking calculated risks leads to self discovery, which leads to personal growth.

What do you find different between Global and a regular class?

Because we travel with students for an extended amount of time, the students get to see me as  person (and father and husband), instead of just a teacher. The same is true with me as I see the students for more than students.

How did you get involved in Global?

Morri, the Godfather of Global, retired and ask me if I was interested. After speaking with my much better half, I took the leap...and have never regretted it.
